The word reliquary comes from the French word reliquaire, meaning “a receptacle, such as an altar or shrine, for keeping and displaying sacred relics and objects.” This series is inspired by Medieval Era religious reliquaries, and addresses my passionate interest in collecting fossils, rocks, and religious symbols and artifacts from antiquity. Each reliquary is nuanced with textures and layers created by carving, applying hand made papers, painting, and sanding that make the surfaces appear to be softened by time. A variety of components are incorporated into these assemblages, each designed to represent and honor an aspect of my faith.
