Artist Statement: This sacred art structure features three prominent religious symbols, the dove, the spiral, and an imbedded cross wax seal. The Holy Spirit is often depicted as a dove, based on the account of the Holy Spirit descending like a dove on Jesus at his baptism. The spiral found in this ancient ammonite fossil has long been used to symbolize eternal life. A wax seal like the one on this antique glass and silver reliquary, was used in biblical times to guarantee security or indicate ownership. The word "seal" often is used figuratively in the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 9:2 Paul described his Corinthian converts as the seal of his apostleship. In Psalm 141:3 the psalmist asks God to seal his lips to prevent sinful speech.
This structure is inspired by Ephesians 1:13 which reads, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit seals those who trust in Christ and ensures them of eternal life. The Spirit's presence is God's guarantee that believers are owned by him and secure in him. The Christian is marked as a new self, a re-creation of God indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:24).
